Masterlock Retractable Cable Lock – Well worth the mere $8

Back in the day, I used to travel with a rubber coated chain bike lock. As the world of bike protection progressed, I moved up to a cable lock. Now, thanks to the fact that smaller is better, I can toss out the bulky cable bike lock and replace it with something much smaller.

The Masterlock Retractable Cable Lock is a small combination lock with a small, retractable cable inside of it. The entire unit only costa around $8 and is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. The lock has about two feet of cable inside of it.

In case you havent figured out why I might want to carry a bike lock around, its actually quite simple. These cable locks are a nice way to help protect your gear. Locking your back pack to to the bed, chair, or another backpack is a great way to help ensure your entire bag dosent get up and walk away. If you are lucky, you may be able to run the two feet of cable through all the zippers on your pack, providing you with one heck of a pack lock.

The quick & dirty:

Where you can get one:
Amazon: $8

Why the rock:

  • Set-Your-Own combination for personalization and easy recall
  • Cable retraction for a tight fit around object
  • Vinyl coated cable to prevent scratching
  • Assortment of 4 colors: Red, Blue, Green, Clear
  • 24″, 1/16″ diameter retractable cable

Seat-of-the-pants rating: 9 out of 10

The only real reason I give this product 9 instead of a 10 is because the length of the cable. A two foot cable should work fine if you ar traveling by yourself. In the even you are traveling with other, a two foot cable might not be big enough for two packs. On a side note, if you want something with a thicker or longer cable, you can buy one at a much higher price.
