REI Hoodoo 3 Backpacking Tent – Roomy and affordable.

While the REI Hoodoo 3 Backpacking Tent may not look like every other backpacking tent out there, that doesn’t mean it is just a creative gimmick. The boxy shape and unique design help make the v much more roomy than many of the other backpacking tents out there. While having plenty of room in a backpacking tent is always nice, it is especially nice on extended hikes. The tent features so much head room and such a large vestibule that it will make the inside of the tent seem much larger than it actually is.

As I said before, the unique shape of the REI Hoodoo 3 Backpacking Tent is what makes it such a roomy tent. This box like shape allows for the tent to have near vertical walls which aide in making the inside of the tent feel larger and give you and your tent mate more room. To keep water from puddling up of the tent roof, the REI Hoodoo 3 Backpacking Tent features a 3 directional slope that slopes away from the tent door. The tent and its rain fly setup pretty taunt, so you don’t have to worry too much about slack areas gathering water in wet conditions.

But, a boxy shape and lost of head room aren’t all that make this REI brand tent so special. The tent actually features a ton of room outside of the tent under its vestibules. Yes, the REI Hoodoo 3 Backpacking Tent features two vestibules. The larger one being in the front, has plenty of room for two packs and some other gear. The back vestibule is smaller, but makes for a great separate entrance, as it features a dry entry door and room to leave wet jackets and boots.

The quick & dirty:

Why they rock:

  • Box frame creates vertical sidewalls for a spacious interior and generous headroom; Tension Truss architecture provides lateral stability without adding additional weight
  • Large front vestibule features dual access points to a huge front door and room to store gear
  • Rear vestibule with dry entry door enables convenient entry/exit and storage options
  • Preassembled hub/pole sets, pole clips and color coding simplify setup; assemblies break down small for packability
  • Insider floor seams are engineered to create a clean, taut pitch and maximize floor space; factory seam taping ensures a waterproof seal
  • UV-resistant polyester rainfly will not stretch or expand when wet, ensuring a consistently taut pitch
  • Active climate control uses flow-through chimney ventilation to move air through the tent and reduce condensation; vents operate from the inside
  • No-wick construction ensures that water won’t sneak through susceptible areas such as guy-out points, pole wraps and zippers in wet conditions
  • Abundant pockets keep your tent tidy
  • Attention to detail shows in the reflective guy points and zipper pulls, and adjustable REI Cleat Lock tie-downs on vestibules
  • Save weight and create a minimalist shelter by using just the rainfly, poles and footprint (sold separately)
  • Comes with guylines and tighteners, stakes, pole repair tube, pole and stake bags and tapered, easy-to-stuff compression stuff sack

Seat-of-the-pants rating: 9 out of 10

Maybe its just me, but i don’t mind carrying around some extra weight if it means I am going to be more comfortable inside of my tent. Granted I don’t spend a lot of time in the tent, but in the event of an extended trip with a buddy, I want to make sure there is as much room as possible. The REI Hoodoo 3 Backpacking Tent does a good job at creating a balance between the weight aspect and the roominess aspect.
