Pitotubes Perfect for Airline Liquid Ban’s New 3oz-or-Less Rule

PitotubesNow that the TSA has modified the complete airline liquid ban, you should be a happy camper. What, you’re not? Neither are we.

While some people are okay picking up a small travel size bottle of Head & Shoulders, some of the more distinguished travelers prefer to have something better (or at least different) like BedHead that isn’t available in smaller containers.

Enter Pitotubes. Conveniently sized for shorter trips (or just less hair) these bottles are available in 3 different sizes - 15ml, 30ml, 50ml (translating roughly to 0.5oz, 1oz, 1.7oz) and come with a label sheet so you don’t have to guess which one’s the conditioner. If you opt for the Pitotubes Travel Kit, you get two of each size, and a metallic mesh bag.

Pitotubes are available direct ($59.95) or from other places like Flight 001 ($50.00).

Another option, is the less stylish Nalgene Travel Kit containing 6 guaranteed-spill-proof bottles, from the makers of famed Nalgene Outdoor products, with varying size, at a much more backpacker-friendly price of $9.85. Available from Magelleans.

DISCLAIMER: There’s a bit of confusion (or maybe it’s just my I-shoulda-been-a-lawyer brain) on the TSA’s revised rules. They say the toiletries have to be travel size (3oz or less) but it doesn’t specify if the container needs to be that size or the contents. One would assume the container. Further, they say all these toiletries need to be able to fit into one quart-size zip-top clear plastic bag, but don’t specify that it needs to be carried in such, so the mesh bag included in the Pitotubes Kit above may be okay. Now the real “disclaimer” part. If you get busted cause you have too much or in the wrong containers, it’s your own fault. Me, I’d try it just to find out. Wanna donate me $89 for a ticket to Reno? I’d be happy to try these all out along with seeing how many pairs of pointy scissors and 7-inch tools I can take through a security line. We’ll even video tape it.

Dear Travel Gear,

Thank you very much for the snippet and exposure you gave my product “Pitotubes” Travel Bottles! I want to also mention that all Pitotube bottle sizes are 3oz. and under. So NOW their absolutely fine in your carry-ons for commercial flying. I just got back from LAX and SFO and it didn’t seem to be an issue. (When I travel with the large bottles it’s enough product for 2-weeks, as many products are concentrated.)

Regarding your “Disclaimer Comment” you are absolutely spot-on about confusing messages about what are absolute acceptable containers?? Currently I’m talking with Homeland Security to see if I can receive their official stamp of approval for my products.

Even before your next publication, I’m sure we’ll be seeing additional changes to airport security regulations “uh-gain” in the near future.

Thanks again for the coverage!

Cheers and Safe Travels,
