How to Become a Travel Writer

By Daved Brosche | Permalink | 0 comments | February 16th, 2007

Ah yes, the coveted job title of travel writer. What enterprising vagabond wouldn’t want to make a living by wandering the globe and writing about their experiences? But where to start?

As always, the World Wide Web holds some great resources for launching your writing career. Check out these websites:

  • WrittenRoad – A BnA resource for all things travel writing.
  • TravelWriters.com – They offer a free and a fee based service that provides quality leads. They also syndicate your content and let you post Google Adsense in your content. Allowing you to make money while sharing your writing samples.
  • Travel Jobs Board – BnA’s travel job board.
  • Craigslist – If you don’t know what Craigslist is, you’re missing out. A great classifieds page to find work all over the world.

Being a travel writer might not make you rich (Although, hopefully it will), but if done correctly, can at least pay for your travel. You might not be traveling in first class or staying in five star hotels, but is that what travel writing is really about?

Check out the websites above and with any luck, you’ll be writing for Conde Nast Traveler in no time. Ok, maybe not Conde Nast, but there is nothing wrong with dreaming big right?

Have you ever been paid for your travel writing? Share your tips on getting published by leaving a comment.
